Amal Clooney
Amal Clooney is a barrister specializing in international law and human rights, a Professor of Practice in International Law at Oxford University, and Senior Fellow of the Oxford Institute of Technology and Justice. She is also the Co-Founder of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, a charity that provides legal aid for victims of human rights abuses in over 40 countries.
Ms Clooney is one of the leading human rights lawyers in the world, ranked in the top tier of the legal directories Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners. She is described as ‘a brilliant legal mind’ who is ‘in a league of her own at the Bar’, with a ‘commanding presence before courts’ and a ‘passionate commitment to the law’. She has devoted her working life to representing victims of human rights abuses before international courts, and her charity is now the largest legal aid provider for women and journalists in the world. It has helped free over a hundred journalists and advocates and helped thousands of women defend their legal rights in court.
Ms Clooney has for many years represented Yazidi girls kidnapped and raped by ISIS, leading to the only genocide convictions against ISIS members anywhere in the world. She represented victims of sexual violence in the only trial that has resulted in a conviction for crimes against humanity committed against civilians in Darfur. And two of her clients have gone on to win a Nobel Peace Prize. She now co-leads an advocacy campaign with Michelle Obama and Melinda French Gates to end child marriage. Amal has also helped to secure the freedom of many journalists imprisoned for their work across the globe. She was appointed the UK’s Special Envoy on Media Freedom by the former UK Foreign Secretary and has provided advice to over 50 governments on protecting freedom of the press. Her work has led to numerous awards including from the American Society of International Law, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, the United Nations, the World Economic Forum, the Kings Trust and Time Magazine. In 2024, she won the Legal 500 Award for international lawyer of the year.
In 2025, Ms. Clooney co-founded the Oxford Institute of Technology and Justice, a global initiative dedicated to harnessing the power of AI to increase access to justice.
