Frederic DyBuncio
Frederic C. DyBuncio is the President and Chief Executive Officer of SM Investments Corporation, the Philippines’ leading conglomerate with interests in retail, banking and property.
Mr. DyBuncio leads the strategic direction of the company and oversees its day-to-day operations. He attends numerous investor roadshows and conferences in Asia and the US to help drumbeat interest among foreign investors and partners in SM Investments.
He heads some of SM Investments’ portfolio investments and has been instrumental in major M&A activities to diversify the company’s interests in high growth sectors of the Philippine economy.
Among these are SM’s recent majority acquisition into 2GO Group, Inc., the largest end-to-end transportation, logistics, and distribution provider in the country. Mr. DyBuncio is the Chairman, President and CEO of 2GO.
He is the Chairman and CEO of Philippine Geothermal Production Company, which pioneered the commercial development of geothermal resources in Southeast Asia in 1971. SM Investments gained full ownership of PGPC in 2022.
He is the Chairman of Goldilocks, the largest bakeshop chain in the Philippines that provides its customers with a wide array of baked goods and home cooked food.
He is the Chairman of the Board of Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corporation which operates the Toledo copper mine in Cebu. The Toledo copper mine is one of the Philippines’ largest exporters of copper concentrate.
Mr. DyBuncio also holds directorships including a Non-Executive Director of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Corporation, and is a Director of Berong Nickel Corporation, while also acting as a board adviser to Belle Corporation and Airspeed, as well as to Premium Leisure Corp.
Under his leadership, SM has received global and local recognitions. Forbes named SM Investments among the World’s Best Employers in both 2022 and 2023. In the Philippines, the Philippine Daily Inquirer recognized five SM companies among the country’s Best Employers for 2024, a testament to the values, culture, and opportunities at SM.
These values extend to SM’s operations in upholding the highest standard of corporate governance that anchors its operations on fairness, integrity and accountability across the group. This has led to multiple recognitions for the company such as the prestigious 5 Golden Arrow Award by the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD), the highest recognition given during the ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard (ACGS).
The results of which brought SM at par with internationally best practices in corporate governance placing among the Top 5 Philippine publicly listed companies (PLCs) and Top 50 ASEAN PLCs conferred by the ASEAN Capital Market Forum (ACMF).
Prior to his post at SM, he was a career banker who spent over 20 years with JP Morgan Chase and its predecessor institutions.
During his stint in the banking industry, he was assigned to various executive positions where he gained substantial professional experience in the areas of credit, relationship management and origination, investment banking, capital markets, and general management. He has worked and lived in several major cities including New York, Seoul, Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Manila.
He graduated from Ateneo de Manila University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management and finished a Master’s degree in Business Administration program at the Asian Institute of Management.
Mr. DyBuncio is the recipient of Hong Kong magazine Corporate Governance Asia’s Best CEO from 2018 to 2020 and from 2022 to 2025. Recently, he also received the Asia’s Golden Icon Award for Remarkable Leadership in Financial Excellence presented by the Golden Icons organization.
