Jumpei Sasakawa

Mr. Jumpei Sasakawa is the President of The Nippon Foundation, Japan’s largest private philanthropic organization, which is widely recognized for its far-reaching commitment to addressing a broad range of social issues, both within Japan and on the global stage. With a robust foundation in both business management and public policy, Mr. Sasakawa brings a uniquely strategic, innovative, and cross-sectoral perspective to the field of social impact leadership. His approach reflects a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of societal challenges and the need for integrated solutions.

Mr. Sasakawa holds a master’s degree from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, where he developed a global outlook on public policy and governance, as well as a comprehensive understanding of institutional systems and leadership frameworks. Prior to assuming a leadership role at The Nippon Foundation, he built a successful career in the private sector and currently serves as President and CEO of LIVNEX Corporation, a Japanese housing company with a 90-year legacy. His extensive business experience-particularly in long-term strategic planning, operational management, and organizational transformation-continues to shape and strengthen his philanthropic leadership style.

Since joining The Nippon Foundation in 2014, Mr. Sasakawa has taken on a series of increasingly senior positions, including Executive Director and Vice President, culminating in his appointment as President in 2025. Under his leadership, the Foundation has broadened and deepened its commitment to addressing pressing and complex societal issues, including education reform, disability inclusion, disaster recovery, and youth empowerment. Among his notable recent achievements is the launch of ZEN University, a fully online university established in Japan, aimed at expanding access to quality higher education through cutting-edge digital platforms. He also initiated a global partnership with Minerva University to promote internationally networked education models.
Furthermore, under his guidance, the Foundation has partnered with the LFC Foundation, the charitable arm of Liverpool Football Club, to jointly develop and promote sports-based education programs for children and youth.

Mr. Sasakawa is firmly dedicated to building inclusive, cross-sector collaborations that bring together stakeholders from government, business, and civil society. He continues to champion sustainable, long-term solutions that address the root causes of societal problems, positioning The Nippon Foundation as a driving force in global philanthropy.
